How to Choose Gym Shoes: Training, Cardio and Weightlifting

Gym shoes for mixed workouts and training beside ODEE shoe care

ODEE SHOE CARE • SPORTS FOOTWEAR

The best gym shoes depend on what you actually do at the gym. A shoe built for steady forward running may not feel secure during lateral drills, while a very rigid lifting shoe is not designed for long treadmill sessions. Choose by movement first, not by appearance.

For mixed gym workouts: consider cross-trainers

Cross-training shoes commonly have a comparatively stable base and support for movements in more than one direction. They can be a practical option when your workout mixes machines, bodyweight exercises, short bursts of cardio and functional training.

For treadmill running: prioritize running-specific features

If you spend much of your session running, look for running shoes with comfortable cushioning, a fit that does not squeeze your toes and a smooth stride feel. Some running models have tall, soft midsoles; these may feel less stable for heavy lifting or fast side-to-side work.

For serious lifting: think about stability

Heavy lifting benefits from predictable foot contact and a secure, stable platform. Dedicated weightlifting shoes may have a firm sole and raised heel, which suits certain lifting techniques. That does not mean everyone needs them: your training goals and technique determine the appropriate shoe.

Ask five questions in the shop

Activity: Is your week mostly lifting, running or mixed sessions?
Fit: Does the shoe secure your heel without pinching the front?
Base: Does the sole feel stable during the movements you actually do?
Grip: Is traction suitable for your gym floor?
Budget: Would one versatile shoe meet your needs, or do you regularly perform two demanding activities?

Specialist activities may require specialist shoes

Court sports, climbing and other activities can require specific footwear. Gym rules may also restrict footwear. If you're unsure about lifting technique or equipment, ask a qualified trainer instead of relying on a marketing claim about 'maximum support'.

After-workout footwear routine

Let sweaty gym shoes air out completely after use, and clean exterior surfaces only according to their material instructions. If an item has a removable insole, follow its manufacturer's directions before taking it out.

ODEE buying tip: Choose footwear for the activity, fit and materials first. Always check the manufacturer's current instructions and care label.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lift weights in running shoes?

For light activity it may be comfortable, but very cushioned running soles can feel unstable during heavy lifting; seek a stable shoe appropriate for your routine.

Do I need two pairs of gym shoes?

Not necessarily. One cross-trainer may suit mixed workouts; specialized, frequent running or lifting can justify separate footwear.
