When to Replace Running Shoes: Mileage and Warning Signs

New and worn running shoe outsoles compared with ODEE shoe cleaner

Running shoes don't last forever, but there isn't one exact replacement date that works for every runner. Your mileage, surfaces, body mechanics and shoe construction all influence wear. Here's how to judge replacement based on condition, not just age.

What mileage do running shoes usually last?

Brooks gives a general life-expectancy guideline of around 300–500 miles (roughly 480–800 km) for performance running shoes. Treat this as a broad reference, not a guarantee. Some shoes may wear out sooner and others may remain usable longer.

Sign 1: The outsole tread is worn down

Look at the areas where your foot contacts the ground. Smooth patches, uneven wear or lost traction can indicate that an outsole is no longer doing its job well—especially if you run on wet or uneven surfaces.

Sign 2: The midsole feels different

Cushioning compounds compress with repeated use. A shoe that suddenly feels flat, uneven or noticeably less comfortable than it used to may need replacing even if the upper looks clean. Surface appearance alone cannot reveal every change in cushioning.

Sign 3: The upper or heel structure is damaged

Check for holes, major fraying, torn lining and a heel that no longer holds your foot securely. Some cosmetic marks are harmless, but structural wear that changes fit deserves attention.

Sign 4: Your shoes no longer feel right

New discomfort or changed stability can be relevant, although pain can have many causes besides old shoes. If symptoms persist, seek appropriate professional advice rather than assuming new footwear alone will solve them.

How to track your shoe's lifespan

If you run regularly, keep a simple record of distance per pair and note when grip or comfort begins to change. Don't confuse cosmetic dirt with structural failure: cleaning may improve appearance, but it cannot restore collapsed cushioning or worn tread.

ODEE buying tip: Choose footwear for the activity, fit and materials first. Always check the manufacturer's current instructions and care label.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to replace running shoes exactly after 500 km?

No. Mileage recommendations are estimates; check the shoe's condition and your experience.

Can cleaning make old running shoes safe again?

Cleaning can address compatible surface dirt, but it cannot rebuild a damaged sole, upper or cushioning.
